Zermatt is a car-free resort, offering it a genuinely unique Swiss ski resort experience.

The Zermatt ski region is easily accessible thanks to free electric buses that connect all of the key lift stations on the valley bottom.

There are also a lot of milk float-style electric taxis available for hiring. Visitors arrive in the resort by the renowned red Zermatt train, which departs from the village of Täsch; it’s a truly magnificent experience. From here, you will be taken aback by a winter wonderland, complete with horse-drawn sleighs in the streets of Zermatt village and the surrounding mountain peaks, including the famed Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn Ski Paradise, which you can access with your Zermatt ski pass, is a large ski area that stretches from Rothorn (3103m) and Gornergrat (3089m) to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn, 3883m) and Schwarzsee Paradise (2583m).

The Zermatt lift pass also allows access to the Italian ski resort of Breuil-Cervinia.

Zermatt skiing is great for a variety of reasons. Zermatt boasts Europe’s highest ski resort lift entry point. It is a snow-sure ski resort, and the ski region comprises ski resorts in Switzerland and Italy. Zermatt is a great destination for intermediate skiers, with plenty of decent red run skiing in the Rothorn region, among other places. There are several obstacles for extreme and expert skiers. The National, one of the longest black routes in the Alps, runs almost to resort level from the Blauherd and is a thrilling challenge for anybody. In Zermatt/Cervinia, there is also the No. 59 slope, which boasts a vertical drop of 250 meters over a distance of little over 750 meters. It has a gradient of 65% at its sharpest point. But don’t worry, there are well-groomed pistes in Zermatt that will fit your level.

Zermatt is of course very famous for the winter skiing, but skiing is possible 365 days a year, thanks to the glacier. The summer season is therefore very attractive for the family summer vacation. Check our guide to summer holiday in Zermatt.
